Valentine Heart Garland

heart garlands

I’m not into flowers and chocolates but I do love an excuse to cut hearts out of paper. In Montpelier, Vermont where I was living the Valentine Phantom would plaster the town with thousands of red hearts. That means spending several hours in sub-freezing temps in the middle of the night taping pieces of paper to every window on every store in town. Amazing when you drive down the street on Valentine’s day…

Sometimes my friend Suki and I would do guerilla arts and crafts for V-tine’s with kids or other women and would write love poems on pretty paper and stick them in random public places…on elevators…bathrooms…etc. I love the idea of spreading love…not just romantic love…but love for everyone.

Anyway, here’s a simple project I used to do with my students. Start by taking a magazine and cut strips about 1″-3″ wide. I used an older Free People catalog.

Fold strips accordion-style…

If it’s helpful, you can draw a heart on one end, but make sure you leave a little room where they will connect to each other on the folds!

Cut the top half…

And then the bottom! Unfold and tape together to hang where you please, or to wrap around a small gift.

2012: Best. Year. EVER.

January 5, 2012 in Reflections, Wisdom

Happy New Year from Rachael Rice

Happy New Year, friends.

I’m not gonna lie, 2011 was a tough year for me and a lot of people I know. A lot of creatives are struggling now, and finding themselves at a crossroads. There is an old way of doing business that depends on competition and what I call the Myth of Scarcity (with apologies to the word “myth” for becoming so pejorative): the notion that there’s not enough awesome to go around, and you must grab yours before someone else gets it. That we must undercut our prices and feel threatened by our “competitors’” success.

I call bullshit.

There is a new breed of artists and businesspeople and thinkers and #occupiers who understand the way of surviving in the future “in these tough economic times” [I barf a little in my mouth when I hear that] — the way of SURVIVING at all on this spaceship Earth — is to remember and act as if we’re all in this together. There is more than enough for everyone. We will be successful when we are generous. That doesn’t mean work for free, (but find ways to give it away now and then), it means work for what’s right.

The new paradigm is catching on in popular culture. You can see it in Oprah’s LifeClass (where she interviews people like Eckhart Tolle), in the savvy advice for the solopreneur of Danielle LaPorte, in the viral spread of ideas repackaged by the folks that gave us the Teachings of Abraham and the Law of Attraction. I mean, these ideas aren’t new. What is new is how modern business practices are being influenced by the connectivity power of community (especially via the Internet). It ain’t just for lolcats anymore people, it’s for toppling dictatorships. People are literally sick and tired of modern business. The business of “health care” [read: insurance], the “business” of agriculture, the “business” of business. There is a sense of hunger for new ways of living, of making money, of using our hands to learn old ways of making new things. Politicians are clearly not moving us forward (thank you, Occupy Movement, for giving us a visual map of this). So it’s up to the creatives: the musicians, the crafters, the geeks, the artists.

It’s a great time to reflect and set intentions for this year. Here’s a great article from the HuffPo that asks some excellent questions such as:

  • Because I wanted to make 2012 count, I…
  • Because fear of failure was no longer a good enough reason to not do it, in 2012 I…
  • Because the world needs my service, in 2012 I…

I love using words as reminders. Toward that end, I made a little poster. I can make one for you, too with your own customized words on it if you’d like. Just email me: rachael(at)rachaelrice.com. Thank you Craft Magazine for this project.

You can make your own, too. Wordle.net is a great place to make word clouds.

Anyway, let’s do this thing. And it will be the best. Year. EVER.

Happy Hannukakwanzamasolstimas!!

December 28, 2011 in holiday

The holidays have been awesome here in Portland so far. It’s not all Narnia with snow like in Vermont, but the truth is, I don’t miss it. We had, like, the most Christmassiest Christmas ever…visited some of Dan’s family, ate Chinese food, went to parties, made snowflake garlands (I should post a tutorial! That shit has SIX SIDES PEOPLE!!), wandered around Peacock Lane, drank eggnog, went to Crafty Wonderland, made crafty gifts (including a TON of custom order dream catchers), watched Scrooge (fave Christmas movie) and It’s a Wonderful Life (fave movie ever), listened to holiday tunes on the radio, donated to charity…really pretty sweet.

Free People Catch A Dream DIY Event!

December 7, 2011 in art, craft, DIY, doilies, dream catchers, fashion, feathers, holiday, Portland Oregon, sculpture

The DIY dream catcher event at Free People Portland was totes amazeballs (lol)! It was featured on their corporate blog, and lots of people came out to get their craft on. My inner art teacher was so excited to share my creative pursuits! And the pieces that people made were unbelievably beautiful. Plus, we had Maple Butterscotch cake with EDIBLE GLITTER (!!!) from Cake & Mukti (check out her blog The Yoga of Cake), and supplies donated by Relica Vintage. I hope I get to do it again! Valentine’s….?

Epic Dream Catcher Raffle at Free People Portland!

December 7, 2011 in art, craft, doilies, dream catchers, feathers, holiday, Portland Oregon, reuse

I made a huge-normous dream catcher to be raffled off at the Free People Portland store as part of an upcoming DIY event on December 2nd.  I also made a smaller one, so there are two chances to win! Raffle tickets are $5 at the store and some of the proceeds will benefit Adopt-a-Family Portland. The drawing will be held on Dec. 15th via Facebook.

This piece took about 3 days to complete and features vintage metal fringe, a detachable fox tail fur charm, earrings from fortune cookie fortunes and vintage lace, with a huge vintage doily behind a hand-woven “web” with vintage button “spider”. There’s also a plastic water bottle feather garland, which was featured on the Free People blog!  You can see tons of photos here on my Flickr.

Last Waltz Fashion

December 6, 2011 in fashion, music, Portland Oregon

I took some photos at a tribute concert called The Next Waltz at the Alberta Rose Theater in Portland, Oregon last week where my man Dan Haley sang This Wheel’s on Fire (Bob Dylan/Rick Danko). The cool thing about the show was that they played EVERY SONG from that concert, not just what you see on The Last Waltz Scorsese movie ~ which if you haven’t seen, you should immediately!

So many that night dressed like the original performers; I think we were all scouring Good Will stores trying searching for 1976 duds. After a lot of internetting and geeking out on the 70′s vibe, I took a bunch of photos. And I’m blown away by the similarities! Here’s my own little visual tribute to The Last Waltz, which includes the poster I made of my last show in Vermont.

#OCCUPY

November 15, 2011 in photography, Politics, Portland Oregon

I’ve spent some time downtown at the Occupy Portland camp.  And I marched on October 5th.  It’s inspiring to see so many people joining together to reject an economic system that supports corporate personhood, bank bailouts, speculative debt mongering, and waging war on the poor.  FYEAH!  Here are some of my photos.  You can see the complete set on my Flickr page.

For more about the Occupy movement, visit http://www.occupytogether.org/.  I strongly encourage you to participate.

I can’t believe the Day of the Dead show will be down in another week!  It’s going to be 2012 in like 10 minutes!!  But it got a nice write up on OPB.org. Nice going Stephanie Brockway for curating this show.

Days of the Dead

October 31, 2011 in art, Portland Oregon

I lived in Mexico for a semester in college.  It was right after my mom passed away (she was a hospice nurse and was 49 when she died, but that’s another story).  I was in Mexico City, and also Oaxaca. I spent some time at Frida Kahlo’s house in Coyoacan, and wept next to her bed where her body cast lay. It really changed my perspective on death.  I continue to be inspired by the retablos and other Dia De Los Muertos art from Mexico, and every so often I create my own pieces along those lines.

This year, I picked Amy Winehouse.  I’m a huge fan, and when we moved across country, I had her on the stereo.  I sold this piece on my Etsy store, and had to create another for the show I’m in this month at Guardino Gallery in Northeast Portland.  I also made Frida Kahlo retablo for the Day of the Dead show at Cannibals Gallery in Northwest Portland.  Huge thanks to Darlene Schaper of Relica Vintage for connecting me with the Cannibals show.Amy Winehouse Retablo

Featured Artist for Alberta Main Street

October 30, 2011 in art, Portland Oregon

The Alberta Arts District in Portland, Oregon is an amazing neighborhood full of awesome restaurants, the best ice cream I’ve ever had, and a “Last Thursdays on Alberta” event that is like a mix of Commercial Street in Provincetown and uhhh…Burning Man?  It’s a carnival atmosphere that is largely self-regulated, with the help of Alberta Main Street’s community organization. You basically can show up on last Thursday with your stuff, and sell it on the street.  No cost, no permit, first come, first serve.  Then at night there’s all manner of parades, street parties, live music, food, and artsy events.  It’s crazy!

Anyway, I love what they’re doing and they love what I’m doing and we’re in love!  I’m grateful to be their Featured Artist for October…visit Alberta Main Street if you’re ever in the area.

Here’s their Facebook page(s):
