make space for crafting 0

i got really inspired by craft magazine’s “make space for crafting” series…so behold my home studio!  this is where the action happens…in my own little world at least.  soon the drum kit will be gone and i will take over zee livink room!  here’s the flickr set of all the photos.

needle felted bird nest and acorns 0

my friend Suki taught me how to needle felt the other day.  it’s crazy!  random pieces of fluffy wool, dish soap, and hot water — then you STAB-STAB-STAB the little piece of fluff until all its fibers intertwine.
so i tried out my new skillz making a bird nest pincushion and some lil acorns (special props [...]

leather and feathers earring project 0

during my trip to portland, oregon i bought some fantastic feather earrings by marion max at an amazing vintage store rocknrose:
i was really inspired by them and thought i’d take a crack at making some feather earrings myself.  mine are made from recycled leather, random beads, a broken necklace chain, and various craft feathers.  ok [...]

retro vintage holiday wrapping paper 0

this stuff blows me away.  i got it last year at ReSTORE in burlington, and i use a little every year, and finally i scanned some images so i’ll feel more free to use the rest…

holiday nature ornaments with deer and butterfly 0

another in a long series of deer-obsession pieces…a project for a snowy afternoon in Vermont: holiday nature ornaments.  these look pretty nice even though they’re plastic and not glass.   I used some scrap sheepskin but cotton batting would work too.  Craft foliage and random little animals are so cute — if I had more globes [...]

holiday craft with trees and deer 0

i’ve been saving these cardboard craft cones…now i know why.
i took a lot of leftover scraps of yarn, buttons, velvet, beads and lace and glue gunned them onto the trees.  they sit like a tiny mighty forest on top of my piano.

plush wool owl project 0

so here’s a little guy (about 12″ x 8″) I made from some old wool skirts, a piece of rust colored velvet, and upholstery pattern scraps for my friend kate sprout for her 17th birthday.  All materials came from the ReSTORE in Barre, Vermont.

dendrochronology, tree rings, and art 0

i truly cannot comprehend how an acorn can become a tree.  but more on my acorn obsession later.
because right now i’m completely captivated by tree rings.
dendrochronology or tree-ring dating is the method of scientific dating based on the analysis of tree-ring growth patterns.
Chris Harrison made “digg rings” by visually representing the “most dugg” stories of [...]

spirograph and shrinky-dink art 0

remember these?  i loved mine so much as a kid…though i also cursed its name as the circles skipped around or pens ran out, ruining the perfect designs…cursed precision!
well i got another one and tried it again after all these years.
then i got to wondering what else i could spiro on and used some shrinky-dink [...]

sheet music art 0

got a bunch of old sheet music and liked the vintage looking fonts and stuff…so I spray-tacked them to some scrap pieces of foam core and thumbtacked them on the walls of our music room:
